At UCB, we are dedicated to improving the lives of individuals living with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), a chronic and painful inflammatory skin condition that significantly affects patients’ quality of life.
Currently, people with HS face multiple obstacles that hinder their ability to live to their full potential. These challenges include a lack of awareness about the condition and delays in diagnosis, both of which can result in delayed or inadequate care. Furthermore, the stigma associated with HS often impacts individuals’ mental health and social relationships. Addressing these barriers is critical to improving the lives of those affected by this condition.
A new international report, Call to Action: Improving the Lives of People with Hidradenitis Suppurativa, published by The Health Policy Partnership (HPP) in February 2024, underscores the profound impact of HS and advocates for systemic changes to improve care. The report, developed with input from a multi-disciplinary Steering Committee, draws on a comprehensive literature review and interviews with people living with HS and healthcare professionals. The research focuses on ten countries: Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. Insights from individuals with HS, featured in the report, offer a compelling call to action to enhance understanding of the disease’s debilitating effects.
The report outlines ten key recommendations aimed at improving awareness of HS among the general public, healthcare professionals, and employers. These recommendations focus on reducing stigma, encouraging individuals to seek timely care, accommodating employees with HS, and improving diagnosis rates and referral processes. These changes are vital to ensuring people living with HS can access the care they need, when they need it.
At UCB, we are committed to supporting the implementation of these recommendations. By working alongside the community, we believe we can create a more supportive environment for people with HS, helping them receive the proper care and attention they deserve both now and in the future.
