Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – The Ministry of Health (MoH) has assured Malaysians that the country is not experiencing a surge in influenza cases, despite growing concerns about increasing infections worldwide. According to recent reports from the World Health Organization (WHO) and other global health bodies, several countries have seen a rise in flu cases. However, the MoH confirmed that Malaysia’s influenza situation remains stable, with key indicators showing a downward trend.
Stable Influenza Situation in Malaysia
The MoH emphasized that Malaysia has not witnessed a significant rise in influenza cases. The positivity rate for influenza samples in the country has decreased from 26.1% in the first week of 2025 (Epidemiological Week 1) to 21.97% in Week 4, marking a reduction of approximately four percentage points.
In addition, the consultation rate for influenza-like illness (ILI) has also declined. Health clinics reported a drop from 5.81% in Week 3 to 4.67% in Week 4. Cases of severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) showed a slight decrease as well, from 7.52% to 7.26% during the same period.
Ongoing Monitoring of Avian Influenza
Although global concerns about avian influenza persist, the MoH has confirmed that no human cases have been reported in Malaysia. The last recorded case in the Western Pacific Region was on January 1, with no new cases detected as of January 31. The MoH continues to collaborate with the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (MAFS) to monitor livestock, wild bird populations, and wet markets for potential risks.
Preventive Measures to Protect Public Health
The MoH continues to promote preventive measures to minimize the spread of influenza. These include regular handwashing with soap, the use of hand sanitizers, covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and wearing face masks, especially for individuals at high risk or those displaying symptoms.
The Ministry also encourages Malaysians to get their annual flu vaccinations as an added layer of protection. Individuals experiencing symptoms such as fever, cough, or a prolonged cold are advised to seek medical attention at both public and private healthcare facilities.
Commitment to Public Safety and Vigilance
The Ministry assured the public that it is closely monitoring the situation and will provide timely updates as necessary. By maintaining vigilant surveillance, implementing biosecurity measures, and ensuring the public remains informed, the MoH aims to prevent the spread of infectious diseases and safeguard public health.
The Ministry further emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in disease prevention, urging citizens to take necessary precautions and seek medical advice when necessary. The government’s proactive approach aims to keep Malaysia’s defences strong against influenza and other infectious diseases.
