Malaysia’s King Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar has shown significant improvement in his health following treatment abroad, according to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
Anwar, who met the 66-year-old monarch during his official visit to Bahrain, confirmed that Sultan Ibrahim, who has been receiving treatment for musculoskeletal pain, will return to Malaysia on Friday. The Prime Minister added that Sultan Ibrahim’s health has greatly improved after undergoing conservative treatment, which “appears effective,” although he emphasized that monitoring is still necessary.
“Thank God, the early conservative treatment appears effective, although His Majesty’s condition still requires monitoring,” Anwar told the press at the conclusion of his trip to Bahrain. “His Majesty’s health has significantly improved, and before proceeding with further treatment, the King has decided to return home on Friday. God willing, treatment will continue if necessary.”
The Prime Minister was in Bahrain at the invitation of Crown Prince and Prime Minister Salman Hamad Al Khalifa. During the trip, photos released by Malaysia’s national palace showed Sultan Ibrahim granting an audience to Anwar, with Queen Zarith Sofiah also present. Anwar updated the King on national matters and inquired about his health.
A statement from the palace on Tuesday confirmed that Sultan Ibrahim had successfully undergone conservative treatment for musculoskeletal pain. The pain, which stems from his intensive military training and active lifestyle in his youth—especially from playing polo—had led to his treatment abroad. Sultan Ibrahim, who has a long history of staying active, is expected to return to Malaysia on Friday.
Earlier, on February 7, the palace had disclosed that Sultan Ibrahim was traveling abroad for treatment, though details about his destination or the specific treatment were not provided. In previous years, the monarch has had medical treatments, including an angioplasty procedure in 2016 after experiencing chest pain during exercise. Angioplasty is a procedure to open blocked arteries.
Additionally, Sultan Ibrahim was reported to have received treatment for a shoulder injury in Singapore in 2018, stemming from an old polo injury.
