The latest research from pet health brand Omni sheds light on just how much we love our pets, revealing fascinating insights into the bond we share with our furry companions.
Many pet owners put their pets first, with 80% of dog owners admitting they talk to their pets as if they were human. In fact, 66% of owners love their pets as much as, or even more than, their human family members, and 64% prefer spending time with their pets over most people.
While cuddles and walks are a way to express affection, proper nutrition plays a key role in keeping our pets healthy. Omni’s research uncovered that 33% of pet owners worry their pets are not getting the right nutrition, 29% are unsure about what their pets can and can’t eat, and 78% would switch their pet’s food if it meant improving their pet’s lifespan.
Omni’s co-founder, Dr. Guy Sandelowsky, emphasized the pressing concerns surrounding pet health: “Skin issues, gut problems, and obesity are soaring among pets, yet few effective nutritional solutions exist. Many pet foods rely on CO2-intensive ingredients and are bland in flavor. Omni is addressing these concerns with a future-proof approach to pet health that doesn’t compromise on taste.”
Omni’s findings also revealed a strong emotional connection between owners and their pets, with half of dog owners prioritizing their pet’s health over their own. Additionally, 67% of owners go to bed with their pets, and 39% eat meals at the same time as their pets. The bond is so strong that 46% of owners feel unwell when their pet is sick, and 79% believe their pet helps reduce stress.
However, pet treats, often given as a primary way to show love, can sometimes be a source of health issues. Many treats contain ingredients like chicken or beef, which can trigger allergies, and are calorie-dense, contributing to weight gain. Over half of UK dogs are overweight, and 10-20% suffer from food allergies or sensitivities. Yet, many owners struggle to identify warning signs, such as excessive paw licking or diarrhea, which can be symptoms of allergies.
Dr. Sandelowsky, a full-time vet turned pet nutrition advocate, noted, “As a full-time vet, I saw 30 cases a day. Now with Omni, we’re supporting 30,000 pets – and growing.” Alongside his co-founder, Shiv Sivakumar, they are revolutionizing pet nutrition with hypoallergenic, sustainable solutions, using novel proteins like yeast, algae, and pulses. These innovative ingredients not only prevent allergies but also contribute to a more sustainable pet food industry, offering a healthier alternative for our beloved pets.
