Health authorities have reported that 23 students from a Hong Kong secondary school fell ill with acute gastroenteritis following an exchange trip to Guangdong.
According to the Centre for Health Protection, the students were part of a group of around 120 teachers and pupils who traveled to Shaoguan, a city in mainland China, on Thursday and Friday. The Department of Health confirmed on Tuesday that the school involved was Sha Tin Government Secondary School.
The first cases of acute gastroenteritis appeared on Friday, when two students showed symptoms. One of them was seen vomiting immediately after disembarking from the bus at the conclusion of the trip. Over the following days, 21 other students developed similar symptoms, including vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and fever, between Saturday and Monday.
Nine of the affected students sought medical attention, but none required hospitalization. The Centre for Health Protection has notified Guangdong authorities about the restaurants in Shaoguan where the group dined, which may have contributed to the outbreak.
