Thailand is experiencing extreme heat this week, with temperatures in some areas soaring to a dangerous 52ºC. Authorities are urging residents to take precautions as the heat index reaches life-threatening levels, particularly for vulnerable groups.
From March 5 to March 14, the heat index fluctuated between 42ºC and 52ºC, prompting health officials to issue warnings. Dr. Thiti Sawangtham, deputy director-general of the Department of Health, emphasized the serious health risks posed by these blistering temperatures, advising people to limit outdoor activities and stay hydrated. He also urged residents to keep an eye on weather forecasts, as extreme heat can lead to heat stroke and even fatalities, especially among the elderly and outdoor workers.
The Thai Meteorological Department forecasts that temperatures will remain in the high 30s to low 40s throughout the week, with the heat intensifying over the weekend. Farmers have been advised to avoid working alone in the fields due to the heightened risk of heat-related emergencies.
While relief may come in the form of scattered summer storms expected later this month, this year’s summer is anticipated to be less severe than 2024, when record-breaking heat led to an unprecedented surge in electricity consumption as residents sought relief from the heat with air conditioning.
