Spring break is a much-anticipated time to unwind, recharge, and escape from the stresses of daily life. Whether you’re boarding a flight, embarking on a road trip, or setting sail on a cruise, safeguarding your health while traveling is essential to fully enjoy your trip.
Dr. W. Graham Carlos, a professor of clinical medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine, shares practical advice on staying healthy amid the unique challenges of travel.
Be Wary of Crowded Spaces
“Crowded environments like airports, bus stations, and train hubs can be breeding grounds for viruses such as norovirus and influenza,” Carlos explained in a news release. “Practicing good hand hygiene is crucial in such spaces.”
For those headed to sunny destinations, Carlos emphasizes the importance of sun protection and hydration. “If you’re traveling to warmer climates, pack sunscreen and stay well-hydrated, as your skin and body may not be acclimated to the heat yet,” he advised. “And use the time away from the daily routine to unplug from media and genuinely reconnect with your loved ones by discussing mental and emotional well-being.”
Adapt Health Precautions to Your Mode of Travel
The method of travel can impact the precautions you should take. Crowded spaces, particularly airplanes, increase exposure to infectious diseases. “Pay attention to hand hygiene, and for those who wish to take extra precautions, wearing a mask for the duration of a flight may be beneficial,” Carlos noted.
Road-trippers should ensure they’re well-rested before embarking on long drives and take regular breaks to recharge along the way.
Prepare for Travel Delays
Advance preparation can minimize stress, especially during busy spring break travel periods. “Flight delays and cancellations are common due to increased air traffic, so it’s wise to have a backup plan,” Carlos said.
Packing overnight essentials in your carry-on can help you manage unexpected layovers. Additionally, Carlos advises allowing extra time to get through crowded security checkpoints and remembering to stretch and move around periodically on long flights to reduce the risk of blood clots.
Check Vaccination Requirements
If you’re traveling internationally, Carlos recommends confirming any vaccination requirements ahead of time. “Vaccinations are always a smart precaution and may be necessary depending on your destination and vaccination history. Some countries require proof of specific vaccinations for entry, so it’s best to research this in advance,” he explained.
Seize the Opportunity for a Mental Reset
Spring break offers more than just a physical getaway—it’s a chance to reset emotionally. “Spring is the season of renewal, making it the perfect time to reflect on life, clear your mind, and focus on positive changes,” Carlos said.
“Consider what’s most meaningful to you and how you can better invest your time in areas that yield the greatest returns—whether it’s family, friendships, or fitness.”
By taking these simple yet effective steps, you can protect your physical health, strengthen your emotional well-being, and make the most of your spring break experience.
