The Government of Guyana, in partnership with the Mount Sinai Health System and Hess Corporation, has announced a five-year extension of the national healthcare initiative aimed at transforming the country’s public health system. The initiative, which originally launched in 2022, seeks to provide world-class healthcare services to every Guyanese citizen.
The next phase of the project will include the establishment of a national cancer center, continued upgrades to national health facilities, including the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, and the implementation of one of the world’s most advanced digital health systems.
The expanded collaboration builds on the substantial progress made during the first phase, which saw Mount Sinai’s support in the rollout of several key health system innovations. These included over 35,000 child health screenings, training programs that will produce nearly 900 nursing assistants by 2025, and the development of a state-of-the-art pathology lab.
This initiative will continue to be funded jointly by Hess Corporation and the Government of Guyana, and will be overseen by the Arnhold Institute for Global Health at Mount Sinai. The Arnhold Institute is dedicated to advancing the institution’s mission of delivering high-quality healthcare globally. Additionally, Mount Sinai International, the system’s international ventures arm, will support the initiative’s ongoing efforts.
A Landmark Signing Ceremony
During a signing ceremony today, His Excellency Dr. Irfaan Ali, President of Guyana, was joined by Dr. Rachel Vreeman, Chair of Mount Sinai’s Department of Global Health, and John Hess, CEO of Hess Corporation. The ceremony marked the official extension of the national healthcare initiative for another five years.
President Ali expressed the importance of collaborative efforts in achieving world-class healthcare. “The journey to world-class healthcare is not walked alone – it is built through strategic partnerships, bold investments, and a shared vision for excellence,” he said. “Today, we take another decisive step toward transforming our healthcare system. By uniting the policy, expertise, and resources of Hess Corporation, Mount Sinai, and the Government, along with our local healthcare professionals, we are shaping a future where every citizen has access to cutting-edge, compassionate, and high-quality care. Together, we are not just improving healthcare – we are redefining it.”
The initiative’s extension represents a continued commitment to improving health outcomes in Guyana, with the aim of creating a more accessible, modern, and sustainable healthcare system for the nation.
