FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – The burgeoning trend of young individuals, particularly girls, showcasing elaborate skincare routines on TikTok has raised concerns among experts regarding the potential harm these products may inflict on youthful skin.
As these videos amass hundreds of thousands of likes, showcasing lavish skincare routines featuring high-end products, renowned skincare brands are voicing their apprehension about the suitability of such products for children.
Haley Durbin, an experienced esthetician, underscores the potential risks associated with exposing young skin to these products. “While these products may seem enticing and well-marketed, the reality is, they’re often unnecessary and potentially harmful for children,” she remarks.
Indeed, the use of certain skincare ingredients found in these products could lead to adverse effects on children’s delicate skin. Notably, prominent skincare brands like Drunk Elephant and Bubble Cosmetics have issued public service announcements cautioning against the use of certain products on young skin. Drunk Elephant’s advisory, for instance, advises parents to “stay away from acids and retinols, as their skin doesn’t require these ingredients at this stage.”
Durbin elaborates on the potential consequences of using such products on young skin, emphasizing the heightened sensitivity of youthful skin to harsh ingredients. “Young skin lacks the protective oils found in adult skin, making it more susceptible to irritation,” she explains. “The use of acids and similar ingredients may result in redness, dryness, and even unexpected breakouts.”
In light of these concerns, Durbin advocates for a more cautious approach to skincare for children. “If children express an interest in skincare routines, it’s important to start with gentle and age-appropriate products,” she advises. “A simple routine consisting of a mild cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen for outdoor activities is sufficient to instill good skincare habits without risking harm.”
As the allure of skincare routines continues to captivate young audiences on social media platforms like TikTok, experts urge parents and caregivers to exercise vigilance and prioritize the health and well-being of their children’s skin.
