Quebec has announced an expansion of its free shingles vaccine program, now offering it at no cost to individuals aged 75 and older starting May 1. Previously, the vaccine was available free of charge to those aged 80 and older. This initiative aims to prevent illness caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox virus.
The decision to lower the age threshold for free access to the shingles vaccine comes in response to the significant impact of shingles in Quebec. According to the Ministry of Health, the province records approximately 27,000 cases of shingles each year, resulting in 600 hospitalizations and 10 deaths annually.
Health Minister Christian Dubé emphasized the importance of this expansion, stating that it aligns with the health plan’s focus on prevention. “Each step we take to expand free vaccine eligibility is a stride toward promoting optimal health within our population and alleviating pressure on our healthcare and social services network,” said Dubé.
Sonia Bélanger, the minister responsible for seniors, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the broader public health benefits of extending access to the shingles vaccine to more individuals. The vaccine will be administered at local points of service and pharmacies across Quebec, enhancing convenience for eligible recipients.
