Mumbai-based content creator Aastha Shah is poised to walk the red carpet at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, breaking barriers as the first Indian with vitiligo to grace this prestigious event.
Aastha’s journey of redefining beauty standards and advocating for inclusivity has garnered support from ‘Brut,’ a popular short videos magazine, as she prepares to make a significant statement on one of the world’s most-watched cinema platforms.
Reflecting on her journey, Aastha shared with IANS, “I have lived with vitiligo since childhood. Initially, it was just patches, and I underwent medication. I never felt self-conscious about my body because my parents always ensured I felt comfortable. It was societal perceptions that made me question myself.”
The 26-year-old made the decision to stop medication after vitiligo spread across her body, aiming to embrace her authentic self and inspire others to do the same.
“My journey gained momentum with Humans of Bombay, reaching millions,” Aastha recounted. “Through various social media platforms, I connected with a wider audience and collaborated with brands to drive real change. Partnering with Nykaa to launch a new foundation shade and featuring on the cover of Cosmopolitan’s Women’s Day issue were pivotal moments.”
Vitiligo, a condition marked by skin pigment loss, fuels Aastha’s mission to promote inclusivity and acceptance on a global scale through her Cannes appearance.
Opening up about challenges she faced due to vitiligo, Aastha shared, “I encountered bullying and was advised to conceal my skin and avoid revealing attire. Misconceptions that my condition was contagious added to the stigma.”
However, Aastha emphasized the unwavering support of her family, which shielded her from societal pressures.
Aastha draws inspiration from Canadian model Winnie Harlow, hailed globally as the ‘Vitiligo Queen.’ “She epitomizes beauty and grace,” Aastha praised.
As she prepares to make history at Cannes, Aastha carries the aspirations of a generation longing for acceptance and representation.
“My purpose is to empower others like me to dream big and pursue ambitious goals in life,” Aastha concluded.
