In honor of World Psoriasis Day, community advocate and award-winning writer Alisha Bridges is sharing her personal journey with psoriasis, a condition she’s battled for over two decades. Her story sheds light on the emotional, mental, and physical challenges of living with psoriasis, and the stigma often associated with the disease. By speaking out, Bridges hopes to encourage education and understanding, aiming to reduce misconceptions that still surround this chronic inflammatory condition.
Bridges, who has spent much of her career as a patient advocate, has become a powerful voice for those affected by psoriasis. Her work not only highlights the struggles of living with a visible disease but also serves as a source of inspiration for others in the psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis communities. “Psoriasis has affected every part of my life since childhood—work, social interactions, dating, and my overall quality of life,” she explains. “Living with a visible condition has led me to face many misconceptions and stigma from others.”
The impact of these misconceptions is something Bridges is working to combat. She believes that education is key to dismantling the stigma surrounding psoriasis, emphasizing that World Psoriasis Day is a vital opportunity for both those living with the disease and those who are unfamiliar with it. “People can be rude and unwilling to understand what psoriasis is, especially if they are not affected by it,” Bridges says. “Awareness days like World Psoriasis Day are crucial for educating others and reminding those of us living with psoriasis that we are not alone in this fight.”
Bridges’ advocacy work has had a profound impact on her life. Through her efforts, she has connected with others who share similar experiences and helped many find the courage to speak out about their condition. “As a psoriasis advocate, I aim to speak for the voiceless,” she says. “There are so many people who live in fear and isolation because they don’t want others to know what they’re going through. I hope my story helps others feel empowered to share their own.”
For those living with psoriasis, Bridges offers a powerful message this World Psoriasis Day: “Don’t let your psoriasis dictate your life. Advocate for yourself, get to know others in the community, and share your story. Your relationship with your doctor should be collaborative, not one-sided. Expect more from your healthcare team and work together to find the best treatment plan for you.”
Bridges’ own hope for the future is clear. “Being free from psoriasis would bring peace to my emotional and mental health,” she reflects. “Living with a visible condition often impacts your self-esteem because of society’s beauty standards. If I could wake up one morning and be 100% psoriasis-free, it would have a profound positive impact on my life.”
As she continues her advocacy work, Bridges remains committed to raising awareness, offering support to others in the psoriasis community, and breaking down the barriers of stigma that often surround the condition.
