Bangkok — Psoriasis has emerged as a growing health concern in Thailand, with over 20,000 outpatient cases reported in 2024. The skin condition has now become the third most common dermatological issue in the country.
An estimated 1.7 million Thais live with psoriasis, with 30% of them suffering from severe symptoms that often necessitate advanced treatments beyond conventional medications. The average cost of treatment per visit is approximately 3,100 THB.
In light of this, Karom Polpornklang, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, announced a significant breakthrough in the development of alternative therapies. The Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine (DTAM) has partnered with Thai researchers to create an innovative herbal patch specifically designed for psoriasis patients.
The patch, which draws on the traditional “Karun Osot” formula, incorporates cannabidiol (CBD) extracts. Utilizing transdermal delivery, it effectively targets symptoms such as thickened skin patches and has shown particular promise for those with mild to moderate cases. This herbal solution provides a promising alternative for patients seeking treatments rooted in Thai traditional medicine.
The innovation has garnered international attention, winning a silver medal at the iENA 2024 International Trade Fair in Nuremberg, Germany. It also received a special award from the China Association of Inventions.
Psoriasis patients are encouraged to consult with Thai traditional medicine practitioners at hospitals and clinics across the country for more information on the herbal patch treatment.
