Hillel Katzeff, an avid swimmer and long-time sufferer of psoriasis, is preparing for his first long-distance ocean swim, drawing a parallel between the challenge ahead and his lifelong battle with the autoimmune condition. For Katzeff, each stroke in the water serves as a metaphor for the perseverance required to manage his psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis—a constant journey of navigating difficult waves until the seas of his condition calm.
Having lived with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis for over 30 years, the South African native has consistently turned to exercise as a means to mitigate the stress that exacerbates flare-ups of his condition. His journey to open-water swimming, off the coast of San Diego, is just one chapter in his ongoing quest for better health and self-empowerment.
Now, Katzeff is setting his sights on a new goal: swimming across Table Bay in his home country of South Africa. This challenging swim isn’t just for personal achievement; it’s a mission to raise both funds and awareness for psoriasis and psoriatic disease. Through this endeavor, Katzeff hopes to inspire others who are grappling with similar conditions, showing that, much like the waves of the ocean, setbacks can be met head-on with determination and resilience.
